The Tufty Fund - Promoting a better life for domestic rabbits
The Tufty Fund was established in memory of a very special rabbit who had a terrible start in life.We adopted Tufty, a black netherland dwarf, from a rescue centre after he had suffered neglect and torment in two previous ‘homes’. He was around 3 years old when he came to live with us in 1996, and he died peacefully 6 years later.
Tufty had some long-term health problems as a result of his poor diet and accommodation in the first years of his life. With proper treatment and lots of time and patience from us, his general condition improved and he became a very happy, confident bunny. Sadly, this is not the case for countless thousands of bunnies who are acquired as children’s pets and are left to suffer a miserable existence in solitary confinement, often kept in tiny hutches at the bottom of the garden. Many are not provided with a healthy diet, regular exercise or adequate shelter from the elements.
We discourage people from getting rabbits as pets for young children, and stress the fact that they are not a cheap, easy option. They are a huge commitment – just as much as taking on a dog or a cat!
In general, pet rabbits have such a raw deal in life. It’s a big challenge to change people’s attitude towards them, but we have to try and get the message across. Please help us to give bunnies like Tufty a second chance. Any donations made to the Tufty Fund are used to help rescued rabbits – particularly with neutering, vaccinations and other vets’ bills. We have also sponsored long-term residents at various rabbit sanctuaries.
PLEASE, PLEASE adopt rescue rabbits instead of purchasing from petshops or breeders!!! You will be saving lives!!!
